I have recently been approached by a number of people regarding what to do with their loved one’s ashes.

To me, once a person passes their essence (or Aura) becomes part of the Universe, they are pure spirit, made up of 100% love.

They are with us when we need them, in the good times and the not so good.

If you are involved in the healing world, they can often become part of your ‘team’, helping direct and strengthen the depth of your work.

The body that was left behind when they passed was purely a vessel, containing their spirit whilst living here on Earth. The physical body is left here as it is no longer required, their spirit (or soul) has moved on to a far more beautiful place.

Whether cremated or buried, they return to the Earth, the most natural of recycling processes.

The question normally asked is, whether their spirit still connected to their mortal remains? My answer, in most cases is no.

The story about what my brother and I decided to do with our father’s ashes might be a good illustration. We couldn’t decide on one place so we split them in two, my half spent a year in an old Lucas battery box in the garage until I decided what to do with them.

Although Dad was a pilot most of his life, he spent a lot of leisure time in his workshop so it would have amused him living in a battery box in a garage! I eventually took them to Arkengarthdale and along with a half-bottle of Scotch (he loved his whisky) were scattered near Surrender Bridge, a place that the family enjoyed spending time over the years.

It is also a place that I can visit with very happy memories, and that is important. My two boys also had a little bit of Gramps to scatter, and they did, at places that meant something to them.

Yes, they can be interred in a churchyard but is that where you want to visit, or would they want you to do so?

Much better to scatter them in a beautiful place, somewhere that brings you happy thoughts and memories, where you can sit and be with them, just as their spirit will always be with you.

I have just returned from Scotland where my boys and I climbed, the hard way, up to the top of Ben Nevis to scatter some of Annie’s (our beautiful Springer) ashes there and she was with us, in spirit, all the way. A fitting tribute to an amazing dog who touched our lives so deeply.

Perhaps the word fun should not be used in the same sentence as the mortal remains of our loved ones, but working out what to do with them, unless they have left specific instructions, can be enjoyable.

Knowing that there is no link between their spirit and their ashes, they are in fact left as an earthly reminder to help you recall the good times spent with them.
